PUSH
Sylvie Guillem & Russell Maliphant (France / UK)
Archived
Widely regarded as ‘the most brilliant ballerina of her generation’ (The Guardian), the legendary Sylvie Guillem returns to the UK, following the sell-out success of her London seasons, to perform at Birmingham Hippodrome. Guillem is joined by dancer/choreographer Russell Maliphant – whose elegant, articulate and resonant language draws on his vast experience of ballet, contemporary, capoeira, t’ai chi and yoga.
This mixed programme features Push, a duet combining the abilities of this extraordinary partnership set to an original score by Andy Cowton, and Solo performed by Guillem to the music of Carlos Montoya. The evening is completed by Maliphant’s signature solo Shift, and the powerful, driving solo Two performed by Guillem.
The four pieces are complemented by lighting designed by Maliphant’s long-time collaborator Michael Hulls, reflecting the flow and energy between movement and light.
PUSH is produced by Sadler’s Wells in collaboration with Russell Maliphant and Sylvie Guillem.

Spellbinding. Every person in the audience sat forward in their seats and was griped by each piece. Sylvie was breathtaking, I had never seen her before, her grace, elegance & athleticism was second to none. Russell in the routine with the shadows was just brilliant, we spent most of the routine trying to work out if all shadows were Russell. The final piece TWO was a worthy finale, we held our breath, just in ore of the intricate moves & the fact of there been no sound of feet shuffling. This show was just wonderful.
