Election Debate: Dancing on Thin Ice
The Future of Public Investment in the Creative Industries
Part of IDFB 2010
Archived
With the General Election just weeks away, what are the prospects for public investment in arts and creativity over the next five years?
Birmingham Hippodrome has brought together a panel of leading politicians and other key figures to debate issues around the arts and regeneration. The Panel includes Ed Vaizey, Shadow Arts Minister and Siôn Simon, until recently Creative Industries Minister who is stepping down to focus on running to be Elected Mayor of Birmingham.
Investment in culture from the taxpayer and lottery player – at European, national, regional and local levels – has been crucial to Birmingham’s renaissance over the last twenty years. As the public purse runs empty, where next for culture? Is the show over? Or will politicians continue to recognise the value of art as a force for economic and social regeneration? After the best decade for arts funding, has the sector made enough of the boom years? Does the cultural community have a strong case ready for the tough times ahead?
The Debate will take place against the backdrop of International Dance Festival Birmingham and as Birmingham bids to be UK City of Culture 2013.
