The couple that passed the tango bug to both of us was Javier Rodriguez and Geraldine Rojas after seeing them on a BBC feature about Tango, which was filmed in Buenos Aires. Javier and Geraldine are one of the most legendary couples in the whole Tango community. We recorded this feature and after a few weeks, every day after work, we just kept watching a few minutes of this couple dancing over and over again. Javier now dances with Andrea Misse and we (Loyd and I) have been going across the world just to take classes with them. Last October, thanks to DanceXchange, Javier and Andrea have come to our club in Birmingham.

I think we like Tango because it is a dance with no limits. It is all based on improvisation with your partner, the music and other people dancing around you socially. You can dance the same tango hundreds of time and they will be completely different every time. I have never felt that from any other dance, where I found the music quite repetitive and boring after a while. Some tango dancers say “Tango gives to their dancers how much dancers give to their Tango”. I believe this is true- the more effort you put into learning it, the greater the satisfaction you can get out of it. It is a difficult dance to learn, but there are just no words to express the feeling when you can “really dance one tango”…

It is great to be part of International Dance Festival Birmingham. We are really honoured for this opportunity. We hope that we can help promote authentic Argentine Tango in the Midlands.

Be transported to South America between Thursday 29 April and Tuesday 2 May with the IDFB Argentine Tango Intensive – offering great atmosphere, energy, and excitement with classes for all levels, including a “taster” course for absolute beginners. Sandra and Loyd Vidal, who run Tango in Brum, will be taking special care of beginners classes. Click here to find out more.
